Punjab Roadways Employees' Union stage protest against transport dep

The Punjab Roadways Employees Union conducted a gate rally at Ludhiana depot on Monday and raised slogans against the state government and rued poor management on part of the transport department.

The rally is part of a state-wide protest carried out in all 18 depots on different dates to voice their long-pending demands.

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) president Pradeep Singh said, "We have not received uniforms for more than 10 years now. The state transport department had promised an amount of `62 lakh for it but nothing concrete has been done so far."

A fleet of 300 new buses was also announced by the transport department last year, but there is no headway in the proposal and most of the employees are still waiting for the overtime payment, which is lying pending with the for more than three years now.

AITUC general secretary Harbansh Singh said, "A proposal of merging 571 buses running under the Punbus scheme was also given, which are loan free, but the transport department have not taken any steps to ensure that all these buses be merged in the roadways."
