The first major downpour of the southwest monsoon hit normal life in Punjab on Saturday, lowering temperature and exposing the hollow preparedness of the civic bodies after streets were flooded in minutes.

Officials of the meteorological centre here said monsoon was likely to remain very active in Punjab, including Chandigarh, in the next 36 hours, with moderate to heavy rain at most places in all districts. Heavy to very heavy showers of more than 12cm are espected in some parts of Punjab and Haryana in the same period.

In Ludhiana, three roads caved in and a truck overturned during the 11cm downpour since Friday night that flooded roads and underpasses, while the overflowing dirty water of the Buddha Nullah and Ganda Nullah entered the houses and shops of what would be smart city. Commuters were stranded on roadsides, as their vehicles stalled in waterlogged areas.

In Patiala, rain caused traffic jams and rainwater brought garbage into slums. Banned polythene packets, household waste, and cow dung had washed into the Ganda Nullah and choked it. Amritsar received 3cm rain, which caused water to log in some areas.
