Eleven illegal immigrants have been caught at two factories in UK after surprise raids were made by the UK Border Agency Officers.

"We raided the premises of Merridale Polishing and Plating Ltd, Brookside Off Friars Street, Wednesbury and its sister site in Oxford Street, Bilston, Wolverhampton," revealed Alice Hopkins, from the UK Border Agency West Midlands.

Eight men of Indian origin were arrested at the Wednesbury site while three others were caught at the Bilston site after investigations revealed that that they had no legal work permit allowing them to work in the UK, he added.

The companies were issued with a potential fine of up to £10,000 per illegal worker which would have to be paid unless it could prove that it had carried out proper pre-employment checks.

He said, "Illegal foreign nationals in this country should be in no doubt that they would not be found, arrested or deported. Also companies that think they can undercut competitors by employing illegal workers should be warned that they will face heavy fines and possible prosecution."
