Police have arrested eight Indo-Canadians and seized a $1.5-million home in Rocky View County, after busting a major drug peddling racket that was active in Calgary, Abbotsford and Vancouver.

The city police and a special unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) busted the racket after getting information about a drug trafficking ring in the area with connections to Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Police say Parvinder Singh Bagri, 24, the kingpin, was leading a comfortable and mortgage-free life in a $1.5-million home on the outskirts of Calgary and owned many luxury cars. Besides, the police have also accused Bagri's brother, mother and father of being players in the drug cartel.

Police said for several years, Parvinder and three others from the Lower Mainland of British Columbia sold drugs in and around Calgary. Search warrants were executed at eight separate locations in the Calgary area.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team said during their investigation, police seized 2.7 kg of cocaine, one kilogram of marijuana, guns and a Taser. They also seized the luxurious home in Rocky View County, $166,000 in cash, jewellery worth $18,000 and seven luxury vehicles worth $110,000, including BMWs and Land Rover.

RCMP sergeant Stephen Scott said the seized goods would be held pending in the court process. "They were driving BMWs and Land Rovers and living a lifestyle we normal people can't afford," he said.

Police continue to find a link between the money gained from drug sales and its use to purchase items with the proceeds of crime. Police said the seizure was one of the largest in recent years in the area. Not only did police identify an operation, believed to have been running undetected for years and bringing in millions of dollars, they also believe they dismantled it from the top down and put it out of business.

Parvinder of Rocky View, Kalwarn Singh Dhillon, 23, Apraj Singh Bassi, 22, and Keerit Singh Brar, 20,  (all BC residents) face multiple charges, including drug trafficking, firearms and criminal organisation.

Charges are also placed against Rajvinder Bagri, 22, Gurdawar Bagri, 50, Jatinder Bagri, 52, all of Rocky View, and Kanwal Gill, 36, of Chestermere for laundering the proceeds of crime. Parvinder Singh Bagri is scheduled to appear in court on November 2 in Calgary.
