Harmohinder Singh Khosa's lawyer is arguing that his client should be found not guilty of second-degree murder. Khosa, 43, is accused of murdering his 34-year-old sister Amarjit Kaur Khosa, whose body was discovered at her Abbotsford basement suite on the evening of July 21, 2010.

Through an interpreter, he entered a plea of not guilty on Monday, the first day of his trial in British Columbia Supreme Court in New Westminster.

“Yes, he killed the victim,” defence lawyer Brij Mohan told Justice Miriam Maisonville.

“The crux of the case is going to be whether Khosa was suffering from a disease of the mind, and whether the disease of the mind made him incapable of appreciating his actions”, the lawyer said.

Extensive medical records will be entered as evidence and two forensic psychiatrists, along with a number of other witnesses, are expected to testify at trial, which is scheduled to last six weeks.
