Punjabi University authorities on Thursday constituted an anti-sexual harassment committee to provide a sense of security to its girl students and female staff.

The committee, formed by vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh, would be led by additional dean students welfare Amritpal Kaur, and comprise senior professors of zoology department Harbhajan Kaur and Ritu Lehal, provost SK Bawa, and research scholar Bhanvi Wadhavan.

Soon after forming the committee, its chairman immediately called and discussed various issues pertaining to the harassment of girl students and women employees.
Amritpal said the basic purpose of constituting the committee was to provide an academic atmosphere and a safe work place for students and employees.

She exhorted the students to immediately inform the committee about any incidence of harassment by any person, so that timely preventive steps and reformative measures could be taken.

"The telephone and mobile numbers of the committee members will be flashed in the university's girls' hostels and the departments," she added.

Students had been demanding the constitution of such a committee for many years.
