In a hard-fought election, Panjab University Students’ Union won all four posts as results on the campus came out by 9pm on Wednesday. Nishant Kaushal of the PUSU became the new president of the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC). The second spot went to Piyush Anand of the Students Organisation of India, while the third spot went to Amritpal Singh of the Students for Society (SFS), a Left-leaning group that fought only for the top post.
Nishant got 2,843 votes, Piyush got 2,505, while Amritpal polled 2,494. Siya Minocha of the National Students’ Union of India was a distant fourth with 2,074.
Last year, in a lopsided affair, SOI, the youth wing of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), had brought the two-year winning streak of Congress wing NSUI to an end by sweeping all the four seats. The NSUI had finished a poor third, even behind PUSU, which had then contested the elections in alliance with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
This year, PUSU had an alliance with a rebel group of the NSUI too.
