Members of the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC), led by its former district president Gurpreet Singh, held a protest at Joga village on Sunday against the registration of alleged false cases against Congress leaders.

Earlier this month, the district police had booked five people, including a Congress leader Baldev Singh, for attempt to murder after two groups clashed at Joga village over a land dispute. According to Gurpreet Singh, the police had booked Baldev Singh just to harass him.

Baldev Singh’s wife is Congress sarpanch of Rarh village while he is secretary of the kisan cell.

“We met every police officer in the district but to no avail. Baldev Singh is innocent and he has nothing to do with the dispute. If Baldev Singh is not released and the charges against him are not dropped, we will go on a hunger strike near the office of the senior superintendent of police,” said Gurpreet Singh.

He said that deputy superintendent of police Rupinder Bharadwaj had, however, assured him that the issue will be resolved after the Sadbhawna rally in Bathinda on Monday.

Station house officer Chanan Singh, in-charge of Joga police station, said that he was not aware of the details of the case which is now being investigated by superintendent of police Rakesh Kumar.
