Race for zila parishad chief hots up

The race for the chairmanship of zila parishad is on after the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance registered their win in the zila parishad and block samiti elections.

The supporters are already speculating about the possible candidate for the chairman, however, no name has been announced by the party high command so far.

According to sources, meetings were being conducted for to deliberate over the issue. The seat for chairman of Zila Parishad has been reserved this time.

SAD candidate from Baddowal Harpreet Singh Shivalik, who is one of the candidates in fray for the coveted post, said the decision of the high command would be final and would be accepted by all. He, however, claimed that he has a support of 13 candidates out of total 37 to be selected as the chairman.

There will be 25 members in the zila parishad and 12 chairmen for 12 block samitis, who will cast their vote to select the chairman of zila parishad.

Santa Singh Umedpuri, SAD district president (rural), said the party leadership will conduct a meeting, but the decision will be taken by the party president only. He further said that the party will officially make an announcement when a candidate is selected for Zila Parishad chairman's post.
