A 25-year-old man from New Delhi drowned, while his three friends had a near-death experience, after their raft capsized in the Beas near the Bhuntar airport, about 10km from Kullu town, on Friday.

The victim has been identified as Ashu.

Police said Ashu and his friends Nishant, Milan and Ashu, all residents of Delhi, had stayed in Manali for a couple of days and were returning home on Friday when they paused at Bhuntar to experience river rafting.

However, within a few minutes of the raft leaving the starting point, it overturned near Bhuntar airport.

While the guide, Vivek Bahadur, swam to safety, others were swept away with the river current. Fortunately Nishant, Milan and Ashu also managed to swim ashore and were rescued by the onlookers.

But the other Ashu, not an adept swimmer, drowned. The body was later recovered from the river and sent for post-mortem examination that will be conducted on Saturday.

A case under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the rafting guide, who is at large.
