water logged

A fatal roof collapse and widespread flooding have happened here because of the continuing rain since Wednesday evening.
The cave-in at Lakshmansar Chowk early in the day killed Khushal, 23, and trapped his parents. Two years ago during another long spell of rain, many aged structures in the same walled city had collapsed one after the other.

Cracks appeared in the local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office because of the immense amount of water logged around. Municipal commissioner Pardeep Sabharwal and mayor Bakshi Ram Arora went to the spot and, later, fire brigade pumped out the excess water.

Between 5pm on Wednesday and 9am on Thursday, the city had received 80-mm rainfall in a 12-hour weather fury, when a brief spell was enough to expose the holes in the monsoon preparedness of Amritsar. The Town Hall office of the municipal corporation itself was worst flooded.
Even the tourists faced lot of inconvenience, as all roads to the Golden Temple and other popular sites were inundated.

In the posh areas such as Lawrence Road, Taylor Road, Ranjit Avenue, and Green Avenue, the situation was no better. At the bus stand, there was no respite either inside or outside.

Digging adds to problems

The rain aggravated the chaos that the city faces already on account of the ongoing Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project. Commuters were stranded, as water accumulated in the dug-up areas outside Khalsa College and Batala Road. The scattered construction material worsened the traffic problem.
