A 22-year-old woman from Rajasthan was crushed to death when a speeding Ford Endeavor SUV ran over the homeless people sleeping on the pavement under Khalsa College flyover, here on Thursday early morning.

The deceased has been identified as Lacha, a resident of Ranikheri village of Rajasthan. She along with her 25 relatives had come to the city 15 days ago for earning bread and butter by selling balloons and toys in the fairs being organised on the occasion of Dusshera festival and religious processions on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti in the coming days.

The police have registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPc Act as the complainant has not made any statement against driver Sukhamrit Singh of Ladowali road. The sources said a compromise has struck in between them and therefore no criminal proceedings were started against the driver.

As per the information, Lacha and her relatives were sleeping on the pavement on the road near night shelter home under Khalsa College flyover on Wednesday night, as the home was locked. Around 1 am, an over speeding ford being driven by Sukhamrit ran over two women, killing Lacha and injuring her aunt.

Meanwhile, her relatives nabbed the driver who tried to flee away from the spot and handed over to the police.

The body was shifted to the civil hospital for post-mortem in the morning and later, handed over to the family. Meanwhile, Lacha’s family and others from the group had left the city with her body to Rajasthan for cremation.
