Former Punjab chief minister and senior Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal on Saturday lashed out at the Badal government for 56 cases of farmer suicides in the state this year.
The figures were presented by Union minister of state for agriculture Parshottam Rupala in the Rajya Sabha.
Bhattal said in 2015, as many as 46 cases of farmer suicides were reported, which means that there had been a substantial increase in such deaths this time and that too in a span of just seven months. She said the trend was worrying and it exposed the Badal government’s indifferent attitude towards the farming community. Bhattal said the state government had failed to take preventing measures to resolve the problems faced by farmers and let the situation get out of control.
She claimed that the Badal government had failed on all fronts, creating resentment among all sections of society.
