The Congress on Tuesday announced that Rajinder Rana would be its candidate from Hamirpur parliamentary constituency. Rana's announcement came after he resigned from the Vidhan Sabha on March 14 and took primary membership of the Congress.
Under the People's Representation Act and rules of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, it is mandatory for any individual who has contested the election as an Independent entity to resign before taking membership of any party.
Rana had won as an Independent candidate from Sujanpur defeating his nearest rival by over 14,000 votes in the elections to the assembly in 2012. Rana was a one-time aide of former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and had contested as an Independent after the BJP denied him the ticket. He will now take on Dhumal's son Anurag Thakur in the May 7 elections.
