Reacting to speculation that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may be the Congress choice from Varanasi against Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the BJP president Rajnath Singh on Friday said "failed children of Gandhi-Nehru family should be spared from politics".
Addressing an election rally in support of the party's Karnal candidate Ashwini Kumar Chopra, Singh said that as Rahul Gandhi had repeatedly proved a failure in making impression in the electoral politics, a large section of the Congress party was now pushing Priyanka's name to save the party from complete ruin.
"Ab samay aa gaya hai ke in bachhon ko jane do. Ho sake to Congress ke mitron koi aur yuva shakti ko khojo. (Time has come to spare these children. Friends in the Congress should explore other youth leaders)," he said.
Singing NaMo song, the BJP leader said Narendra Modi was the only Indian politician who suffered political attacks for 12 long years, but he had come clean of all charges and now emerged as the national leader. "Party recognised proven qualities to lead the country in Narendra Modi, a man with a humble background, and was made the prime ministerial candidate," he said.
"Kya Congress aisa kar sakti hai (Can the Congress party act so?)" he asked the gathering, which responded loudly in "No".
Rajnath Singh strongly favoured a free hand to the Indian defence forces to chalk out strategic security mechanism to handle the enemy forces.
He said that neighbouring countries like China and Pakistan had become a serious threat but the Congress government had failed to take any
"Pakistani agencies behead our brave soldiers and our prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and the Congress president maintain complete silence. It is high time to bring a political change by electing a strong leader like Narendra Modi as the prime minister to maintain sovereignty," he said.
Singh blamed the Haryana government for unemployment and poor economic condition of the farming community who land was acquired "at dirt cheap rates".
Clarifying that the BJP didn't make an impossible promise of government jobs to all unemployed youths, the BJP president said that the party commits to initiate a skill development programme at the national level.
"There is a need to build an army of youths trained in different avocations and the BJP government would ensure low-interest bank loans to the enterprising youths. We will also introduce crop insurance scheme to save farmers from any adverse conditions," he said.
