The festival of Raksha Bandhan will remind one of social networking sites this year, since rakhis of various shapes and sizes with WhatsApp and Facebook themes are flooding the local markets in Jalandhar.

With the growing popularity of social networking sites, these rakhis, are available at Rs 20-25 a piece, are becoming very popular among people, especially children. Rakhis with cartoon characters such as Doremon, Pikacchu and Chhota Bheem, which are popular with children, too are ruling the markets.

Shopkeepers said the raw material for the bulk of these rakhis comes from China and they are assembled here.

“These rakhis are in high demand because children like them. They love to wear their favourite cartoons on their wrists. With the growing popularity of the social media, the demand for rakhis with WhatsApp and Facebook themes is also rising,” Kshitiz, who runs a shop at Attari Baazar, said.

“Rakhis made of Chinese material are cheaper than those made locally,” he said.
