Raman Gupta of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday was elected president of the Bassi Pathana municipal council, with the support of Congress councillors.
The post of president was lying vacant following the resignation of Kulbhushan Malhotra on September 25. Malhotra had also resigned from the post of councillor.
As per the schedule, the election was held at the council office. Out of 12 councillors, 10 were present, besides local MLA Nirmal Singh, who is the ex-officio member. Councillors Pritpal Singh Dharni of the congress and Anu Jhanji did not attend the meeting.
Gupta was declared elected as president after majority of the members raised hands in his favour.
After the election, MLA Nirmal Singh said of the 10 councillors, six belonged to the Congress, even then SAD managed to get elected its councillor Raman Gupta as council president. He claimed that Congress councillors supported Gupta due to development works done by SAD in Bassi Pathana and surrounding areas.
Gupta's name was proposed by the MLA and seconded by Ranbir Singh and Mohan Lal Sappal.
Gupta said he would work for the development of the town. SAD district president Jagdeep Singh Cheema was also present on the occasion.
