Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar on Wednesday defended the Haryana government's move to nominate Yoga guru Ramdev as its brand ambassador.
At Gharaunda in the district on Wednesday, Gurjar said that Ramdev was instrumental in popularising yoga worldwide and known as a social activist.
"There is no reason for anyone to oppose Ramdev being brand ambassador. He belongs to Haryana and is a health icon. Ramdev may play a vital role in encouraging people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. I understand he was chosen only for his contribution of yoga," said the minister who represents Faridabad parliamentary constituency of Haryana.
Gurjar also slammed the opposition for being hypocritical on the farmers' issues. "During the Congress regime in Haryana, farmers were given a meager amount in the name of crop loss compensation and they did nothing to improve the situation. Now, the Bharatiya Janata Party government has introduced several welfare programmes for the farming community and fixed a minimum amount of crop loss compensation," he said.
To a question on transfer of senior bureaucrat Ashok Khemka, he said that the Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar was also an upright official with focus on development.
"Khemka is known for his integrity but his transfer cannot lead to any biased conclusion. Haryana CM is an open minded person and known for working in a just manner," he said.
