Demanding a fair probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), followers of the jailed religious leader Rampal held protests at various district headquarters of the state on Tuesday.
They also demanded withdrawal of charge of treason against Rampal and stressed on handing over the investigation to the central agency.
Demanding immediate release of Rampal, the protesters claimed that their leader was implicated in false cases. They said that the state government was depriving their right to follow faith of their choice by keeping Rampal in jail and imposing restrictions on the ashram activities.
A group of nearly 50 persons, including women and children gathered at the Karnal mini secretariat on Tuesday and held a peaceful demonstration. Similar protests were held in other districts also but there was no input of untoward incident from anywhere.
Protesters were not allowed to go near the main building of the complex and sub divisional magistrate (SDM) Rajiv Mehta accepted the memorandum from the protesting group.
Rampal was arrested by the police from his heavily fortified ashram at Barwala in Hisar district on November 20.
Nearly 200 persons had sustained injuries after members of the alleged private army of Rampal had attacked the police with firearms, acid bombs, etc.
It took the police two weeks to enter the ashram after Rampal’s followers turned violent. Police had recovered five bodies at Rampal's ashram where thousands of people were holed up for days.
