Convict Ranbir Singh, 44, serving eight-year jail term in a rape case, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Sunday morning in the district prison. He belonged to Faridabad.
Ranbir's family has accused a Haryana Police Service (HPS) officer of plotting his murder. "Ranbir was in solitary confinement and the matter of his death is under investigation," said superintendent of police Abhishek Garg, adding that the outcome of a magisterial inquiry by judicial officer Arvind Kumar would decide the next course of action.
The SP said the autopsy report could give the police further clues. Police sources said the body had a rope around the neck but the SP said it was unclear if the death was natural or the man had been killed inside the high-security prison.
Ranbir's family has asked for a fair investigation. "Ranbir was framed, and a police officer posted in the national capital region hatched the conspiracy to eliminate him," said the convict's brother, Karambir Singh.
Sadar station house officer (SHO) Narender Singh said he had not received any complaint of foul play in the death. "Judicial officer Arvind Kumar has recorded the statements and the police are yet to take any further action," he said.
