Surjeet Kaur, a 17-year-old girl from Indira Colony in Phillaur who was raped by a man from the same colony in her house on November 1, died at Jalandhar civil hospital on Saturday.
A case under sections 376 (rape) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC has been registered against the main accused, Money Singh, and his uncle Amarjeet Singh.
The victim's mother, Bimla, working as a daily wager in Puaari village, complained to the police that her daughter was all alone when Money entered the house and committed the crime. Amarjeet and others later came to the house and took him away, the police said.
Bimla rushed to the house after some residents of the colony informed her about the incident and found her daughter lying unconscious.
Bimla took Surjeet to two nearby private hospitals, from where the victim was referred to Phillaur civil hospital. Surjeet did not disclose to doctors that she had been raped, and after her condition turned serious due to excessive bleeding, she was referred to Dayanand Medical College Hospital, Ludhiana on Saturday. Bimla, however, took the girl to Jalandhar civil hospital, where she died at around 4 pm.
Phillaur police station SHO Gulshan Lal told HT that raids were on to nab the two accused. "The victim's mother lodged a complaint just half an hour before the girl's death. Had she lodged the complaint on the day of the incident, we could have nabbed the accused immediately," he said.
