Police on Monday arrested the mother of a three-year-old girl who died on Saturday at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Research, Chandigarh, where she was being treated for the past month, after allegedly being raped and beaten up.
Investigating officer (IO) Bhupinder Singh said a case was registered against the woman, Neha (20), resident of Chhangla village in Hoshiarpur, on a complaint lodged by her husband Sunil.
Sunil had told the police that he was estranged from his wife, who allegedly had illicit relations with her brother-in-law Mohalla Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar resident Shallu Chohan, who was arrested after Neha claimed that he had raped her daughter in Nakodar on September 5.
However, the medical report of the victim, prepared by Hoshiarpur civil hospital on September 10, could not confirm rape, and sources alleged that the accused had beaten up the child on instigation from her mother, adding that she had illicit relations with the accused. The victim was admitted in a paediatric clinic in Jalandhar, where she was treated for one day before being referred to Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences.
When her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to the civil hospital on September 10, from where she was later referred to PGIMER for surgery on her intestines, which had been ruptured by Chohan's blows.
The victim's body was cremated at her village on Monday. The accused was produced in a local court, which remanded her to judicial custody.
