Former Punjab chief minister and permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday demanded that all detainees who had completed their sentence and are languishing in jails within and outside Punjab must be released.
In a statement issued here, Amarinder said the issue must not be viewed in partisan or sectarian terms but purely on the basis of law and justice. He said it was a matter of law and justice that all people who had completed their sentence should be released forthwith.
The former chief minister rejected the assumption to link the issue to a particular section of society or that he was pursuing a particular agenda. He pointed out that these detainees might belong to different religions and not to anyone in particular.
"The fact of the matter is that when they have completed their sentence, they must be released as that is the demand of justice," he said.
Amarinder added that chief minister Parkash Singh Badal could not run away from his responsibility as he (Badal) could take steps for releasing those languishing in Punjab jails and take up cases of prisoners in other states at the government level.
