Teachers under the banner of the Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) at Punjabi University have appealed to Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to immediately order the release of 20 per cent pending pay arrears of university faculty.

The arrears pertain to pay revision under the Sixth Pay Commission of the UGC. The pending amount is for the period of 43 months from January 1, 2006 to August 31, 2009.

Jaswinder Brar, convener of the front said, the withholding of 20 per cent amount of arrears was against the government's own decision of paying the full arrears in three instalments.

As per the finance department's own notification, duly issued on January 2, 2013, the Punjab government had made a public commitment to release pay arrears in three instalments.

"The state government has released the 80 per cent amount of arrears but has withheld the 20 per cent amount which was unjustified, unconstitutional and against the government's own notification," he said.

He said the teachers of the government college and of the government-aided private colleges and that of Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar had already been paid full arrears in March 2013.

Members of the front urged the chief minister to order the release of the amount before May 31.
