punjab Updated: Jun 20, 2013 20:45 IST

SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann has demanded the immediate release of 94-year-old prisoner Asa Singh, who was allegedly beaten up by inmates in Hoshiarpur jail and have demanded a judicial probe into the incident. Mann has also demanded that Asa Singh be shifted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) for treatment.

Mann alleged that Asa Singh was wrongly implicated in the bank robbery case because he was wedded to the Sikh ideology and dedicatedly worked for SAD (Amritsar). He said that beating up an elderly man in the prison was not only 'inhuman' but also a violation of human rights. He revealed that SAD (A)'s media advisor Iqbal Singh Tiwana had spoken to Hoshiarpur deputy commissioner in this regard and requested him to arrange for Asa Singh's release and treatment.

Meanwhile, the Dal Khalsa has asked the Punjab home secretary to release Asa on parole. Party president H S Dhami, who met Asa Singh, in the civil hospital, said in spite of government orders that no one above 80 years of age will be imprisoned, 94-year-old Asa Singh was languishing in the jail. He condemned the jail authorities for their gross negligence and for failing to take up the case of aged and ailing person with the government in time.
