With the release from jail on bail of Independent MLAs — the Bains brothers from Ludhiana — and their 28 supporters by Wednesday evening, the city was witness to a truncated road show.

The Ludhiana Police had arrested Simarjit Singh Bains, Balwinder Bains and their 28 supporters on April 17 on the charges of attempt to murder, loot and sand mining when they started a movement against sand mafia. The Bains brothers had formed a ‘Team Insaaf’ against the sand mafia that tried to excavate sand from Chuurwal Dheri village on the bank of Sutlej river.

“Our protest against the sand mafia being promoted by the SAD will continue,” said Balwinder Singh Bains during the road show.

The brothers and their supporters claimed that the government had tried its best to subdue them. Balwinder Singh Bains was released late on Tuesday, Simarjit Singh Bains was released on Wednesday evening. A wave of supporters gathered at the Gurudwara Manji Sahib (Alamgir) where the brothers had come to pay obeisance.

Simarjit alleged that the state government tried to harass him at the Mansa jail. Balwinder was kept at the Ferozepur jail. “Electricity at both the jails was disconnected. We were not allowed to use fans as well as lights,” said Simarjit.
