The philanthropic spirit of Amritsar residents came to the fore yet again when a truck loaded with blankets was dispatched for flood-affected Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

Naresh Sharma, district BJP president flagged off the truck from the local office.

Terming the floods as an unpleasant development, Sharma said the entire country stood with the residents of J&K in their hour of tragedy. “The relief material has been contributed by the city residents, who are known for extending a helping hand towards the victims of natural calamities and disasters,” he said.

Missionary Khudai Khidmatgaran, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has also urged people to contribute generously towards the cause.

PS Bhatti, president of the missionary, said while earlier 36 items had been included in the relief material, at present the demand was more for ready-to-eat items, mineral water and medicines.

He urged the residents to contribute material like biscuits, rusks, roasted grams in small packets of 250gm, jaggery in small packets, milk powder or condensed milk, sugar, glucose in 100gm packets, oats, porridge, cornflakes, tea-leaves, salty snacks (namkeen), besides one litre bottles of mineral water and medicines, including pain killers, antibiotics, antiseptics, and medicines for loose motions, cotton, skin cream, mosquito repellant creams, micro tapes, small tubes of tooth paste and tooth brushes as well as women’s toiletries.

The contributors should mention ‘Contribution or submission’ with their or the name of their firm, but should avoid marking these as ‘donations’,” said Bhatti.
