Pathankot mayor Anil Vasudeva and local MLA Ashwani Sharma have assured residents of providing good roads by end of the next month.

Even if the condition of all roads were not improved, they said, the condition of important roads would definitely be enhanced by June 30.

Most of the roads in the town are in dilapidated condition, which deteriorates even further when it rains. The situation is aggravated by deep potholes in almost all roads, which accumulate rainwater for days.

The pressure on infrastructure is growing with every passing day; however, since its formation as a district, Pathankot has hardly seen any infrastructural development, including roads, as a result the infrastructure in the town has started crumbling and crying for the government’s attention.

Accidents are rampant due to poor road conditions, many people have sustained injures due to feet-deep potholes on almost all roads, while a teenage daughter of a BJP leader lost her life in an accident two years ago.

In such a scenario, the assurance by the mayor and the MLA has rekindled the hope of a better infrastructure among the residents. “I am happy to hear that the mayor is concerned. Let’s see how he fulfils his promise of providing good roads by June 30,” said Harash Kumar, a resident.

“We are sick of dust entering our shops and lungs,” said Mahesh Kumar, a resident of Patel Nagar locality, which witnesses heavy flow of traffic on the broken roads. “The local body should at least keep the busy roads in good shape,” he concluded.

When contacted, Vasudeva, who has earned good residents’ plaudits as the chairman of the Pathankot Improvement Trust for making good roads, claimed he would fulfil his promise of providing good roads by June end.

With the funds available, he said his prime aim would be to improve the condition of most busy roads first, and other roads would also be improved as soon as the MC received more funds.

“I will attend the All India Mayors Conference on May 14, where I will raise the demand of sufficient funds for providing basic civic amenities, which is their right. Besides, I will also keep a check on the quality of the roads,” Vasudeva added.
