Supporters of Rajinder Rana, the former MLA from Sujanpur in the district and Congress candidate from Hamirpur Lok Sabha segment, are extremely upset with the defeat of their leader. Rana lost to his old friend Anurag Thakur of BJP by a margin of 98,403 votes. While Rana lost the Lok Sabha elections, his wife Anita lost the Sujanpur assembly bypoll.

Ranas' supporters were optimistic simply because both were candidates of the ruling party and having the blessings of chief minister Virbhadra Singh.
However, their hopes were dashed to the ground once the election results were announced. Rana could get lead only in one assembly segment (Haroli of Una district) out of 17 that fall under the Hamirpur Lok Sabha seat.

By fielding Rana as its candidate, the Congress party had played a calculated game to defeat the BJP in its own citadel, but Modi wave was too powerful to resist.

Political analysts say that the overconfidence on the part of Rana and his team led to the debacle as they were solely depending on the Virbhadra factor to sail through.

Moreover, Rana had won the Sujanpur assembly seat in 2012 as an Independent. He later switched his loyalty to the Congress and became its member.
Meanwhile, Rana thanked the people of Hamirpur Lok sabha seat in general and Sujanpur assembly segment in particular for extending him and his wife their full support in the elections. Rana said that he would continue to support the down trodden members of society as he was doing before he became MLA from Sujanpur. He said that he was happy that people supported him during the election.
