The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday announced Subhash Chander, a retired engineer, as its candidate from Shimla. Chander is a known face for the residents of Shimla town as he worked as junior engineer in the Shimla municipal corporation for almost two decades.
Chander, who hails from Haripur in Kangra district and holds a diploma in civil engineering, retired as executive engineer from the PWD seven months ago.
He came to Shimla in 1961 and during his stint in the municipal corporation, Chander roped in local banks to generate funds for public welfare works. Chander also remained the employees’ leader and was general secretary of the State Non-Gazetted Officers Association for seven years. He regularly raised issues related to the employees.
“I feel honoured that AAP has reposed faith in me to take on the BJP and Congress candidates. I have joined AAP with a mission. Whenever there was a change of government in the state, I would get posted from one place to another. I favour a change in the system so that employees are not harassed,” says Chander.
“I was deeply inspired by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee,” he says. About 130 people had applied for the AAP ticket from the Shimla seat.
