Slamming the Punjab government for announcing cash rewards to cops for arresting proclaimed offenders (POs), the Congress on Tuesday said this move was a testimony of “total politicisation” of the police.

“That the cops need to be bribed for doing their job reflects the extent to which the police force has been politicised and rendered unprofessional by the Akalis,” Congress leaders Sukhjinder Randhawa, Ajaib Singh Bhatti and Ajit Inder Singh Mofar said in a press statement.

Quoting an October 26 letter of director, bureau of investigations, IPS Sahota, announcing Rs 10,000 reward for arresting each PO, the Congress leaders said the move was a ploy to mislead the election commission (EC) following the chief election commissioner’s reprimanding the Punjab Police brass over the number of POs (20,000) in the state. They said the high number of POs reflected the failure of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who looks after the home portfolio.
