Rice mill owner booked for paddy embezzlement

punjab Updated: Aug 09, 2013 19:07 IST

The Bhadaur police have booked a proprietor of a rice mill for embezzling paddy worth R1.63 crore belonging to Markfed. Markfed had stored 1.05 lakh bags of paddy in Swati Rice Mills, Bhadaur, in 2009.

The mill had to return about 67% rice after milling of paddy to Markfed by June 30, 2013. However, the mill owner swindled the amount by fudging the quantity of paddy and delivered 22 truckloads less than promised.

Following a written complaint of the Markfed authorities to the Barnala SSP and after preliminary investigations, a case for misappropriation and cheating has been registered against proprietor of the firm, Makhan Lal, a resident of Tapa. "The culprit has been absconding and will be nabbed soon," said DSP Harwinder Singh Virk.
