Rise in theft cases at Mansa govt offices exposes security lapse

The recent break-ins at tehsil offices and theft of electronic equipment have exposed the lack of security near various government offices in the district. The rise in such cases has apparently emboldened thieves.

On March 25, tehsil office employees reported to the police that three LCD screens were stolen after the lock outside the office was found broken. “It happened on March 24 night as thieves broke into the tehsildar’s office and took away LCD screens but no documents were missing,” said a policeman from city-2 police station where an FIR was registered.

On March 31, a similar incident took place at the tehsil office in Joga where thieves took away an air-conditioner. The Joga tehsil office was shifted to a new premise a few months ago and some of the items were yet to be shifted. “Even months after the office were shifted to a new building, the previous one was left with few items. It is the negligence of the office-bearers who could not ensure that all particulars were shifted in time,” said Joga SHO.

Last year, burglars targeted the office of MLA Prem Mittal and got away with electronic equipment. HT also found that there was no security arrangement near tehsil and MC offices across the district. “We have raised this issue on many occasions but it has not been addressed,” said Mansa tehsildar Darshan Singh. He said they had hired a security guard who passed away recently and the theft incident occurred after his death. The police claim that drug addicts are usually behind such thefts.
