Traffic from Model Town, Shastri Nagar, Model Town Extension and Pakhowal was disrupted in Ludhiana on Tuesday after a portion of road caved in at Ishmeet Chowk.
Alleging the LMC authorities of having used "substandard material" during the last repair, which was carried out three years ago, the area residents have demanded a probe into the cave-in that was six-feet wide and 15-feet deep.
It is noteworthy that there was a similar road cave in at this specific intersection almost three years ago and the LMC authorities had failed to repair it for several months.
The intersection at Ishmeet Chowk is located in the middle of the thickly populated posh localities of the city.
Soon after the cave in, the traffic from all four sides came to a standstill thereby leading to traffic chaos that caused harassment to commuters.
Harsimrat Kaur, a resident of Shastri Nagar, rued, "As it is we are reeling under the stress of worst bottlenecks in the city and this cave has further added to the problems. The LMC should take a strict notice of the cave in and should summon the contractors and officials concerned for an explanation."
Superintending engineer of operation and maintenance wing Manjit Singh visited the site and stated that it was premature to comment on the cause that has led to the cave in.
"Apparently, I think that the problem occurred due to laying down of illegal sewerage connections in and around the area due to which there must have been an internal seepage resulting in the weakening of the road from within," the SE added.
