Robbers decamped with Rs 35.8 lakh from Gurdaspur Central Cooperative Bank at Taragarh village near here on Friday morning. The robbers also injured the cashier of the bank who was alone at the bank at the time of the robbery.
According to cashier Sham Lal's statement to the police, he opened the bank at about 8.30 am to undertake some important work when an unidentified youth entered the bank and asked him about the procedure to open an account. The cashier told the police that the youth later flashed a gun and asked him to hand over the keys while two other youths waited outside the bank.
The cashier said he was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon, injuring him, and the youths decamped with Rs 35.8 lakh. A sweeper later found the cashier injured and called the bank manager, following which the police were sounded.
DSP Prabhjot Virk said the CCTV cameras were not functioning, which was a matter of concern.
He said the police had registered a case against the three unidentified youths.
The cashier was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.
