Robbers' gang busted in Barnala; nine held

The local police claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of robbers by arresting nine persons on Tuesday.

The suspects were wanted in many cases registered at different police stations and some of them had been declared proclaimed offenders. The police also recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition, sharp-edged weapons and stolen vehicles from their possession.

The suspects have been identified as gang's kingpin Gurdeep Singh alias Mana, Buta Khan, Surinder Singh, Parminder Singh alias Tiger, Jagjivan Singh, Gulab Singh, Mohanjeet Singh, Manpreet Singh and Deepak Kumar.

Briefing the media on Wednesday, inspector general of police (Patiala range) Paramjit Singh Gill said as many as 17 cases of murder, attempt to murder and Arms Act were registered against the gang at different police stations in Punjab and Haryana. A total of 12 cases were pending against Buta Khan alone. Seven cases were pending against Surinder Singh, four cases each against Mohanjit and Manpreet in several police stations.

Superintendent of police Snehdeep Sharma said on February 13 this year, six members of same gang were arrested from Mehlan Kalan in the district and three .315 pistols were recovered from their possession.

Gill said the gang used to commit robberies at petrol pumps, liquor vends, besides snatching vehicles at gunpoint. The gang was active in Sangrur, Barnala, Patiala, Ludhiana and in some districts of Haryana.

Gill said acting on a tip-off, a team of Barnala police conducted a raid in Badra village near here and arrested the suspects. Gill said the police recovered three .12 pistols, three .32 pistols, two .315 pistols, 12 live cartridges, swords and axes from their possession besides four vehicles, including three Maruti Swift cars (PB 13AA 8997, PB 13G 5933, PB 19 C 5933) and a SUV (PB 10A 0645).
