The Phagwara police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of its four members here on Sunday.
The kingpin of the gang is already lodged in Kapurthala modern jail.
The gang members admitted to their involvement in the March 29 robbery at a mobile shop in nearby Chachrarhi village. They had hit the shopkeeper in the head, who died at Dayanand Medical College Hospital, Ludhiana 10 days later. Subsequently, they were charged with murder.
The police have recovered two iron rods, a knife, a unregistered Honda Shine motorcycle, four cell phones and 250 grams of narcotic powder from them. They have been booked under various sections of the IPC, Arms Act and NDPS Act.
Addressing mediapersons here, Kapurthala SSP Inderbir Singh and Phagwara SP Harkanwalpreet Singh Khakh said, "We have arrested Rajinder Kumar of Behram village, Ravi Kumar of Rurki village, Ashwani Kumar of Chachrarhi village and Jagrup Singh of Lohian. They were working under the guidance of Som Nath, the kingpin of the gang who was arrested by the Gorayan police on April 10 under the NDPS Act."
The SSP said several criminal cases were registered against Som Nath, who had been posing as a carpenter.
"On February 7, the gang had looted Rs 57,270 from the Government Agriculture Society office in Bhanoki village after injuring the watchman. On March 29, they hit a shopkeeper, arwinder Singh, on the head with an iron rod while he was on his way home on scooter after closing his shop. They took the keys from his pocket and drove to the shop on the victim's scooter, from where they took away mobile phones," said the SSP.
