A security guard at a HDFC ATM kiosk was found murdered in the wee hours of Sunday near Durga Nagar on Ambala-Hisar road.
It is being seen as the handiwork of a gang of robbers who had come to steal the money from the ATM and when security guard, Sahil Saini, 21, confronted them, they strangled him to death.
The robbers, however, couldn't break open the ATM. They decamped with the mobile phone of Saini and whatever cash he was carrying. The CCTV camera at the kiosk was found damaged too.
The victim was a contract employee with a security agency, 'Clear Secured Services'. Saini was a student and had been doing night job to supplement the income of the family.
The police have registered a murder case against unidentified robbers at the Sadar police station.
Residents said that the crime came to light when Sahil's father Mahipal Saini came looking for him at 7.30 am as his son had not returned home and found him dead. He informed the police.
Sources said that this was the fourth incident this month where money was stolen or an attempt was made to break open the ATM.
Earlier, robbers had taken away an ATM of IDBI bank on Naraingarh Road carrying Rs 8.5 lakh. An attempt to break open an ATM in Basti Ram Bazar was made on January 21. Before that, robbers had made an attempt to break open a Yes Bank ATM at the wholesale cloth market.
Police commissioner (CP) Ajay Singhal said that suitable cash award would be given to the person who would provide clue to identify the robbers.
Residents pointed out that the armed robbers generally overpower the unarmed security guards, so, only armed and trained guards should be deployed at ATMs.
