Diyal Bharang (Ajnala): Four armed men stormed into a branch of Punjab National Bank (PNB) at this village in Amritsar district on Monday and took away a cash box containing Rs 21 lakh.
The robbery occurred around 11.45am, about 32km from Amritsar. After barging in, the robbers overpowered the guard first and then the staff along with 10 customers; and after pushing them into a corner, took the cashier as well at gunpoint. It took them only a few minutes to finish the robbery, captured in the bank's closed-circuit (CCTV) camera.
They did not even care to cover their faces. Inspector general (border range) Ishwar Chander took a police squad to the scene, where it studied the footage from the surveillance camera and talked to the bank officials and the customers who had seen it all. "It will help our investigation that the robbers were not masked," said the IG.
The police have sealed all roads leading out of the district, laid traps, and put toll-plaza operators on alert. "We have an input that the robbers fled towards Batala," he added. "They warned us not to raise the alarm." said a witness. The police cordoned off the bank branch, which is on the main village square, and put forensic experts on the job.
