Robbery bid foiled on Bibi Jagir Kaur's son-in-law

punjab Updated: Dec 27, 2012 19:07 IST

A gang of seven-eight robbers attacked the national vice-president of Youth Akali Dal Bhupinder Singh late Wednesday evening. Bhupinder Singh is the son-in-law of Bholath MLA and former minister Bibi Jagir Kaur and looks after the constituency in her absence.

"Bhupinder was on his way in his SUV on the Begowal-Bhogpur road, when seven-eight people, brandishing swords, forced him to stop near Tandi village and tried to rob him," said Bibi Jagir Kaur while talking to HT.

"When he switched on the interior light of his car, one of the robbers recognised him. However, others commented that his identity did not matter," Kaur added.

Kaur added that when the robbers moved towards Bhupinder, his gunman fired in the air, which scared the robbers and they fled.

"However, Bhupinder and his gunman captured one of the robbers, while others managed to flee. Bhupinder received some bruises, but escaped the attack," she added.

Down-playing the incident, she claimed that the robbery attempt was seemingly the handiwork of drug addicts and could have happened with anyone.

DSP Tejvir Singh said that the robber caught by Bhupinder and his gunmen had been identified as Balbir Singh, a resident of Bhagarian village falling under Bholath police station.

"Two motorcycles have also been seized from the spot. We are trying to locate other attackers. Soon, all of them will be in police custody," he said.
