An all-women fleet of autos to cater exclusively to women passengers became operational in the city from Wednesday with four autos accepting fare. A brainchild of the Rohtak traffic Police, in collaboration with the Road Safety Organisation, considerable planning and effort has gone into the setting up of the fleet. The autos have been coloured pink and the main motive of ensuring safety is likely to be achieved to a fair percentage. Providing jobs to women is also a sub-motive.

HT caught up with Promila, one of the women being trained for the job, and she wanted to be first driver of the all-women fleet of pink autos.

"We are ready to provide a safe ride to Rohtak women and will set a new benchmark in auto service," claimed Promila.

Three other woman -- Ritu, Rajbala and Jyoti --- have started the auto service and four others --- Neelam, Kavita, Luxami and Sonu --- are being trained taking the number of autos on the road to eight.

The training of these women has been under the charge of auto driver Pardeep Badhdwar, who is working free of charge and spends two-three hours every day on their training in an open ground.

The vehicles have been purchased from Shivam Atul Auto, who has offered `11,000 discount on purchase of autos with pink covers, designed for woman drivers.

Rohtak SP Shashank Anand said, "We want to make the city a safe place and thus the initiative. Rohtak has several big educational institutions and safe commuting has been a challenge. We want 40 pink autos on the road in the next four months."
