Family members of a local youth, Amit Sangwan (29), on Thursday alleged that police tortured him to death at the police station after he was arrested on allegations of eve-teasing.

Amit was declared brought dead by the PGIMS here on Thursday morning after the police rushed him to the hospital. As per his family, the police had arrested Amit on Wednesday night in a case of eve-teasing.

Kuldeep Singh and his wife, residents of Baloth village had filed a complaint of eve-teasing against Amit at Sadar police station, Rohtak. The police later arrested him from his house in Baloth.

However, the police have booked the complainants on the charges of murder and said that the latter had already beaten Amit up before the police reached to arrest him. But the police failed to answer why it took Amit into their custody if his condition was critical and why the police took about seven hours to take him to the hospital.

Om Parkash, father of the deceased, said that there were injury marks on his son's body when he was brought to the PGIMS by the police.
However, Rohtak (Sadar) police station incharge Rajbir Singh refuted the allegations that the police had beaten up Amit. "When we were about to arrest him, he had already been beaten up by the complainants. A few hours after his arrest, he complained of pain in his chest. We took him to the hospital where doctors declared him dead".

The police have booked four people on the charges of murder, including Kuldeep and his wife Priyanka. However, no one has been arrested yet, he added.

The police has also ordered a magisterial probe in the matter and the deceased's body has been sent for the postmortem.
