The 13,050 feet high Rohtang Pass, the gateway to tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti, will remain open for vehicular traffic till November-end if weather remains good in the district.
The district administration closes the pass for vehicular traffic on November 15 in view of the safety of the people as snow makes it difficult for vehicles to move on the highway.
The pass, around 50 km from Manali, experienced mild snowfall twice this month but the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which maintains the highway that passes through rugged Himalayan ranges, managed to open it for traffic in a couple of days.
Kullu deputy commissioner Rakesh Kanwar told HT: “If the weather conditions permit, Rohtang Pass will remain open for vehicular traffic till month-end.
The district administration has not received any communication from the BRO authorities on closing the highway,” he added.
The Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti district administrations would soon set up rescue posts at Marhi and Koksar to assist travellers in the region in emergency till December 31.
