Short of money to develop the city and keep it clean, the municipal corporation has approached private companies to see if they can take over the maintenance of important roundabouts.
The roundabouts at Bhandari Bridge, Hall Gate, Crystal Chowk, Lawrence Road and other places may be handed over to these companies. The MC claims that the companies are willing to maintain the city's green spaces. On Tuesday, the corporation had a meeting with the representatives of various companies.
The 22 roundabouts in question are in a bad shape but there's little money with the MC for makeover. "We have invited bids from the companies keen to maintaining these roundabouts," said municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda. "The shortlisted companies will submit designs for the construction, repair and maintenance, which the MC will approve."
The companies won't have any advertising rights beyond the display of name on the roundabouts. "The aim is to motivate people to come forward and do their bit for the city by adopting roundabouts, green belts and parks for maintenance," said Kharbanda.
