In a bid to encourage panchayats to work effectively, Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia today announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh to the village that has the best rural local body in his constituency.

"It is high time that the panchayats play a more dynamic role in rural development," he said addressing people in Leherka village and Kotli Dhole Shah in Majitha constituency.

"The village with the best panchayat would be given a grant of Rs 2 lakh, apart from the regular grant allocation," he said.
At the same time, he warned that sarpanches found guilty of misusing grants would be taken to task.
