The much-awaited ‘Saragarhi Sarai’, a luxurious inn for pilgrims, was inaugurated along the Heritage Street near Golden Temple on Tuesday. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) had laid the foundation stone of the Rs 44-crore project in December 2011 to provide better facilities to devotees.
Now, pilgrims visiting Amritsar can stay at ‘Saragarhi Sarai’, and even online booking will begin soon.
Inaugurated by SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar, the nine-storeyed inn is spread over 1.13 lakh square feet. It has 12 VIP suites and 226 rooms. While the VIP suite’s tentative tariff is Rs 1,500-1,600 per day, other rooms cost Rs 1,100.
Although the inn is fully air-conditioned and well-equipped with safety measures, its parking space can accommodate only 15 vehicles.

Tribute to Saragarhi martyrs’
Badungar said as lakhs of pilgrims visit the Golden Temple everyday, there was a need for another ‘sarai’ in the area. Dedicating it to the martyrs of ‘Battle of Saragarhi’, the SGPC chief said the 1897 event “tells a story of bravery, pride and valour in which 21 Sikhs refused to give up in the face of adversity and attained martyrdom while fighting the battle against 10,000 Afghans”.
Parminder Singh, a partner in the firm that has supervised the inn’s interiors, said rooms in ‘Saragarhi Sarai’ are bigger than those in other inns in the area.
- Fully air-conditioned
- Waiting lounge with cafeteria
- Fire alarm, safety arrangements
- CCTV cameras
- Solar plant for warm water
“The flooring is a mix of marble and tiles. In VIP suites, wooden flooring has been done,” he said, adding: “The linen and mattresses are of international standards, and furniture has been imported from China.”
The sarai is well-equipped with fire alarm and safety arrangements and CCTV cameras. There is a solar plant on the upper storey to provide warm water in winters.
Badungar said pilgrims will be provided the facility of online booking soon. In coming days, free wifi facility may also be provided to the pilgrims staying here, said SGPC officials.
