Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) secretary general Jaswant Singh Mann, 73, died on Monday morning after a brief illness. He is survived by wife and three sons. The cremation will take place here on Tuesday.

A former president of the All India Sikh Students’ Federation (AISSF), Mann started as a teacher at Khalsa College, Patiala, and subsequently taught at Punjabi University. Later, he shifted to Punjab and Sind Bank as a senior manager. Mann was one of the founder members of Bank of Punjab and served on the post of executive vice-president.

Once considered close to Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, he remained a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal before quitting in 2005 to form the All India Shiromani Akali Dal. He merged his party into Simranjit Singh Mann-led SAD (Amritsar) in 2013.
