With the local SAD leadership revolting against alleged interference in party affairs by the son-in-law of party in-charge Satinder Kaur Kariha, the party think-tank has appointed senior leader and Ropar MLA Daljit Singh Cheema as an observer to iron out differences among senior leaders in the district unit.

Over the past two weeks, son-in-law Jagteshwar Singh Majithia’s reported emergence as a power centre has

ruffled many feathers, something Cheema is expected to sort out.

Cheema is also to select candidates for the panchayat samiti and the zila parishad elections.

The appointment of Cheema came after a meeting between senior district leaders like SGPC member Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, Pavinder Singh Kariha, Kulwinder Singla, Mohan Singh Mahal, Harjit Singh Bhatti and SAD’s municipal councillor Param Singh Khalsa and
the chief minister on Friday evening in Chandigarh, sources within SAD said, adding that the message did have the desired effect.

Sources added that the leaders were quite frank with the CM and told him that emergence of Majithia as their leader was not acceptable to them, and he was projecting himself as a leader even though he was not even a member of the SAD

“Badal took a serious note of our complaint. He immediately called up Ropar member of legislative assembly Daljit Singh Cheema and appointed him as the party observer in the district,” a leader, present at the meeting, told HT on the condition of anonymity.
“Cheema will play a pivotal role into selection of candidates for the zila parishad and panchayti samiti elections as we feared that SAD can lose panchayat, zila-parishad and municipal council elections in Nawanshahr due to Majithia as most leaders do not want to support him,” the leader added.

Senior district leader and SGPC member Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa said, “We spoke to the CM on certain recent hapeenings within the district unit that are against the party principles.”

Talking to HT , senior SAD leader and Ropar MLA Daljit Singh Cheema said, “I have been appointed an observer and my brief is to guard the party’s interests and ensure a successful election campaign. I will be visiting Nawanshar within two days and will try and ensure that all the differences are sorted out soon.”

Meanwhile, supporters of Majithia have alleged that senior leaders of the party were defaming their party for vested interests.
