Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator from Atam Park constituency Simarjeet Singh Bains has come forward in favour of independent councillor from ward number 8 Daljit Singh Grewal, whose supporters clashed with those of a SAD legislator at New Shakti Nagar on Sunday.
SAD MLA Ranjit Singh Dhillon's supporters had come to blows with Grewal's supporters over the inauguration of a road carpeting project, leaving 10 persons injured in the melee.
On Monday, hundreds of Grewal's supporters came together in Basti Jodhewal area and marched towards the police commissioner's office.
They raised slogans against MLA Dhillon and the police. Later, MLA Bains reached police commissioner Paramjit Singh Gill's office in favour of Grewal and demanded an independent inquiry into the matter.
After the meeting, the MLA said the police chief had assured him of a fair and impartial inquiry in the case.
Bains said instead of installing foundation stones, the leaders should lay emphasis on development of the area.
He claimed that the work order of the disputed road stretch was passed in the last tenure of Grewal and credit for the development work should be given to him.
Grewal had contested the municipal corporation elections in 2012 with Bains's support.
On the other hand, Basti Jodhewal police produced Grewal and his accomplice and independent councillor Gurpreet Singh Gora before the court on Monday.
The court remanded them in two-day police custody. The duo was arrested on Sunday.
The police also booked Grewal's brother Kulwinder Singh, Jagmel Singh, Abbas Mohammad, Dalwinder Singh, Jagpal Singh, Sukhmel Singh, Jagjit Singh, Monu, Sangat Singhm Ranjit Singh, Jassa Singh and Gurcharan Singh in the case. The accused are yet to be arrested.
The case was registered following a complaint by Teja Singh Khalsa of Mohalla Indirapuri. While reacting on the matter, MLA Dhillon said the leaders should act responsibly while issuing any statement. “Bains is an MLA from another area, and therefore does not have any idea about my area,” he said.
Dhillon claimed after formation of MC House, the mayor had cancelled all pending work orders. “Thereafter, locals requested me to take initiative for carpeting of the road, which the councillor had failed to do. Therefore, I took the initiative and got the work started,” he added.
