The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday held a review meeting of the recently concluded tour of its ministers and office-bearers to the US, Canada and England.
Briefing deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal about the visit, ministers Tota Singh, Sikander Singh Maluka and Daljit Singh Cheema said NRIs abroad had asked the visiting team that all those who had filed for asylum in these countries were not able to visit India. The leaders said there was a demand from this section that they should be treated as economic asylum seekers and not political asylum cases.
The issue of the opposition faced by the delegation was also discussed and a viewpoint emerged that the SAD should organise such interactions with NRIs, especially non-resident Punjabis, frequently. It was also conveyed that all those addressing the meetings in foreign countries be well-informed and go there well-prepared.
The leaders, including CM's adviser Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Pargat Singh, also talked about the problems being faced by the NRI community in securing 'native' certificates.
The SAD is expected to hold another meeting to discuss the issues of non-resident Punjabis shortly.
